The sculpture project is well under way with the sculptor currently working on the maquette (initial 25" sculpture) and the fund raising in full swing. Investors in the memorial sculpture of Mr. Mondavi are excited to be involved in honoring the Man who did so much for Napa. While we are reaching out and trying to find everyone who would like to be involved, we are grateful for any assistance that you can provide by forwarding information about the project to anyone we may have missed.

I am almost always available to answer questions about the project and am happy to sit down over a glass of wine or lunch to talk about the sculpture.

One year has passed since the world lost one of it's greatest winemakers. Robert Mondavi's name, influence and passion for wine and life reached beyond Napa to people and places around the world. He made making wine and enjoying it a part of everyday life and of a healthy lifestyle.

Possible Sculpture Locations

As word about the Robert Mondavi Memorial Sculpture gets out and our community rallies behind the project, additional locations for the sculpture are being suggested. The Coalition to Preserve Copia hopes to develop a re-use and financial plan allowing Copia to re-open in a new form, one that is both financially sustainable and community focused. It has been suggested that if all goes well for this group and they acquire Copia, they might be interested in having the sculpture erected there. Ultimately, the sculpture will stand in a place decided by Mrs. Mondavi. If she wants it at Copia and the new owners are amenable, Copia will most certainly be a fitting place for the sculpture to reside.

The Artist's Recent Commissions

Jay Hall Carpenter has sculpted some of the best and most beautiful monumental portrait sculptures created in the last thirty years. Known for his ability to capture a person's true essence, Mr. Carpenter is definitely the right Man for our very important project.
Here are images of some of his most recent work.

"Douglas Fairbanks, Sr." was commissioned by film maker George Lucas and stands in front of the new film school at USC.

The "Jim Henson" memorial (shown with Mr. Carpenter prior to its completion) was commissioned by the University of Maryland and was installed in front

of the Stamp Student Union Building in College Park, Maryland.

"Senator Goode" was commissioned by the University of Missouri at St' Louis and stands at the university.

We are honored that Mrs. Mondavi has approved the selection of Mr. Carpenter to recreate Mr. Mondavi's likeness in bronze. There is a lot of work to be done and the end result will be a beautiful ten-foot tall sculpture of the champion of the Napa Valley. The Robert Mondavi Memorial Sculpture will be enjoyed for generations and will serve as inspiration to those who believe that hard work, intelligence and perseverance can result in happiness, success and all of the good things that life has to offer.

Magnum - $100 - $2,499 includes a certificate of appreciation

Double Magnum - $2,500-$ 4,999 includes a certificate of appreciation and program recognition at the unveiling ceremony

Jeroboam - $5,000-$ 9,999 includes a certificate of appreciation, program recognition at unveiling and (2) tickets to the VIP unveiling reception

Imperial - $10,000-$19,999 includes a certificate of appreciation, program and memorial plaque recognition plus (4) tickets to the VIP unveiling reception

Melchizedek - $20,000 + includes a certificate of appreciation, program and memorial plaque recognition , (4) tickets to the VIP unveiling reception and a 25” limited- edition, cast-bronze maquette of the Mondavi sculpture

Robert Mondavi Memorial Sculpture Commission in Progress; Downtown Napa Plaza Chosen as Probable Location

Napa, California – May 2, 2009 -- Quent Cordair Fine Art is pleased to announce that a probable location for the ten-foot bronze Robert Mondavi memorial sculpture has been chosen. Negotiations are underway with surrounding property owners, the city of Napa and the Napa Property Business Improvement District (PBID,) to have the sculpture erected in Dwight Murray Plaza, located on First Street in downtown Napa. The commissioned sculptor, Jay Hall Carpenter, has begun preliminary work on the tribute to the legendary vintner. The sculpture is being entirely funded by private donations. No public funds are being sought.

As the anniversary of Mr. Mondavi’s passing approaches, he is remembered as an extraordinary leader of vision and energy -- a mentor, inspiration, neighbor, and friend. The ten-foot bronze sculpture will celebrate and memorialize the singular qualities of the man who for decades served as head of the Napa Valley wine community’s extended family.

Tax-deductible donations to fund the creation of the memorial are now being accepted from individuals and companies who wish to honor Mr. Mondavi's memory. All donors will receive recognition. Top end donors will have their names added to the memorial plaque and will also receive among other things, a 25” limited-edition bronze casting of the sculpture. In honor of her late husband, Mrs. Margrit Mondavi has approved the selection of renowned monument sculptor Jay Hall Carpenter for the commission. Mr. Carpenter was elected into the National Sculpture Society before the age of thirty and has won numerous national awards for his sculptures. He served for 20 years as sculptor-in-residence for the Washington National Cathedral. Many American churches contain his work, as do the US State Department, the Smithsonian, Canterbury Cathedral, and the New England Medical Center. Other clients include West Point Military Academy, the Washington Theater Awards, and the State of Maryland. Recent commissions include memorials of Senator Wayne Goode for the University of Missouri, a bronze and granite sculpture of Jim Henson for the University of Maryland, and a memorial sculpture of Douglas Fairbanks, Sr., for the USC film school, commissioned by George Lucas.
